The Multi-skill Academy programme forms part of the Government’s PE, School Sport and Young Person (PESSYP) strategy with the Multi-skill Academy programme forming part of the Gifted and Talented element.
In keeping with the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, the activities at both Multi-skill Academies are non sport-specific but instead are based around the development of fundamental movement and sport skills.
Pupils from schools in the Mid Kent & Ashford School Sport Partnership may be invited to attend our Multi-Skills Academy called the MKA Panthers
If year 5 or 6 pupils perform well at partnership competitions or in the Inter~Intra League and are not already part of a community sports club they may be invited to attend the Multi-Skills Academy.
The academy brings together talented athletes from across the partnership to develop their skills. The athletes have been selected using the results from the partnership’s Inter~Intra League, a competition that over 7000 pupils from years 1 to 8 take part in each term.
The academy was launched in May 2007 and is based on the three Olympic principles – Fair Play, Cultural Understanding (understanding one another) and Personal Excellence.
The aim of the academy is to give the athletes a life philosophy or a code of conduct to follow throughout their everyday lives, not the pursuit of medals and trophies.
The Olympic motto has been adopted as the academy’s motto:
CITIUS-ALTIUS-FORTIUS
FASTER-HIGHER-STRONGER
These three simple words encourage the athlete to give his or her best during training and competition, and to view this effort as a victory in itself. The sense of the motto is that being first is not a priority, but that giving one’s best and striving for personal excellence is a worthwhile goal.
Members of the academy will compete in a number of competitions under the name of the MKA Panthers, a name and logo devised by the original members of the academy.
The academy is run by the partnership’s School Sport Co-ordinators (SSCos) and is held at two sites, one in Maidstone and one in Ashford.
