The second tournament of the Primary Schools Basketball Championship was held on December 9th 2009. The event saw a number of close games throughout as well as a very exciting final! With newly entered teams from Sandling Primary School (2) and Victoria Road Primary School, as well Beaver Green, the event was well attended and high standards were set on court by the young players. After a good showing in the group games, Victoria Road defeated Sandling 1 by just 2 points in a close 3rd/4th place playoff game, which provided a fitting prelude to a thrilling final. After going through the group games undefeated, Sandling 2 were given a stern test from an excellent Beaver Green team and the schools were tied at 6-6 after regulation time had expired. The evenly matched schools remained deadlocked after 2 periods of overtime, which led to a tense shootout that saw Sandling named Champions by a single basket.
The next event is due to take place early in 2010, with more schools set to join. The events take place in the format of a Central Venue Tournament and are held at the North School*. The schools involved play a set number of fixtures on the day and results are recorded. At the end of the school year, all schools that have participated in one or more of the tournaments will play in a Finals Day. On Finals Day the schools will be seeded based on their previous results and drawn into a knockout tournament. All participating players will receive certificates of achievement and the top 3 teams will receive an additional award.
*ALL Primary Schools are welcome to attend. We encourage all young players to take part and emphasise that previous basketball experience is not necessary.
